WSJ: Insurance, Financial Services Industries Make Des Moines An Economic Recovery Leader
Friday, May 28, 2021Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported some midsized cities, including Des Moines, are among those best-positioned for economic recovery. Reporter Justin Baer noted nearly one-in-three Des Moines jobs "require at least a college degree," putting it on par with Chicago. He further reported the proportion of the workforce employed in finance (14%) exceeds that of New York City. Baer wrote,
"The area's first insurers arrived in Des Moines more than a century ago...Their presence, along with favorable state regulations and a lower cost of living than the insurance capitals of the Northeast, drew many more."
